Every watch dial has 1853 placed near the 12 o’clock position indicating its rich history since 1853. The Tissot logo comes with a plus sign symbolizing Swiss heritage, quality, and reliability. These watches are sold in more than 160 countries. The reason for the popularity of the brand is because these watches are authentic and reasonably priced. There are some facets of its history which is worth a read.
Father Charles-Félicien Tissot and son Charles-Émile started this as an assembly shop in Le Locle, Switzerland. The initial days were of pocket and pendant watches. These were mostly made of gold and were rich decorative pieces with a lot of complexities.
Even the Russian Empire was a fan!
These watches were really selling quite well and were mainly exported to the United States and the Russian Empire. Tissot also started their arm in Moscow. These timepieces were so elite, the Czar also started fancying them (Czar was the emperor of Russia till 1917).
The first Tissot wrist watches
From the 1910s, Tissot started selling its first wristwatches for women. These were made of gold and platinum pieces and set with diamonds.
As they couldn’t leave the men disappointed, wristwatch models for men were created. These models had a complete range of the artistic styles to technical innovations. Tissot also made the world’s first non-magnetic wristwatch.
Unique designs for the youth
The baby-boom generation of the 60s and 70s were a distinct age group. They had their own culture and means of expression. So Tissot started creating collections for teenagers which were chic and original.
Tissot started exploring new materials in watchmaking and started using synthetic materials, such as fiberglass. Imagine, they started making automatic watch movements from fiberglass. All the gears and every part possible in the machinery was fiberglass. These were fun, colorful and lightweight models.
Countering the quartz competition
In 1983, to beat the Quartz competition, Tissot joined the Swatch group. To be a differentiator, Tissot created iconic watches. Like the RockWatch, the first watch made of natural stone followed by WoodWatch and PearlWatch.
Tissot sensed the extraordinary potential of touchscreens many years back. In 1999 it created the T-Touch, the first tactile (operated by touch) watch in the world. In 2014, they made the T-Touch Expert Solar, a new version powered by solar energy, another first in the world!
Tissot has been named Official Timekeeper and Partner for basketball with the NBA, FIBA, and CBA. It has also associated itself with the Tour de France and the UCI World Cycling Championships and many more!
